Gunnison to Lake City

After 2 restful days in Gunnison (last blog post) and enjoying the Wanderlust Hostel, we headed back on the trail with some lengthy hitchhiking …. left the hostel at 9am and got on the trail ~ 1pm!

We seemed to have a huge amount of food when we left Gunnison

The very next day on trail (around MM 315) saw us enjoying the trail magic of Apple. It was a long, damp day for us and the soda & chips from his station were relished.

Lovely Apple, who does Colorado Trail magic in the Summer and Florida Trail magic in the Winter

The next day, we hiked to 12,612 ft and camped on the saddle just below San Luis peak, so we could climb a fourteener (our first!) the next day, Sunday July 22nd.

Our windy overnight spot at 12,612 ft, just below San Luis. Our tent – the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 – performed well.

Here we are at ~ 8am, at 14,014 ft on San Luis peak on Sunday July 22nd

After the fourteener, we headed off into Segment 21 and camped ~ MM 347 with a few others.

We saw a moose on the hills here in the morning

Segment 21 was really pretty…mostly above 12,000 ft..

Our next stop was Lake City for a night…Dominic’s foot was bothering him, so we hitched into town and had a night at the Matterhorn Motel.

Join us next time, when we head into Segment 22.
