Cedar Key Camping & Rainbow River Paddling

Recently, we had a great couple of nights away camping with our friends Justin, Simon & Lara at Shell Mound campground in Cedar Key ($15 RV spot, $5 Tent spot). We attended the Annual Cedar Key Small Boat Meet in Cedar Key, run by the  West Coast Trailer Sailing Squadron  – check out that blog post here – and paddled on the Rainbow River too!

After a couple of great nights in Cedar Key, we headed home to Palm Harbor, via a day on the Rainbow River – always a great stop for a paddle/swim/snorkel. Tons of divers and paddlers here on a gorgeous Sunday along with manatees, anhingas, turtles galore etc..

We parked & launched from K.P. Hole public park ($5 each) and paddled up the short distance to the head springs. Not much of a flow here, so it’s a relatively easy paddle against the current.

You can swim/snorkel along the way (tons of bass, sunfish and gar) or land at the headsprings (pay fee at the state park) and swim there.

A great day out!
